Books of people - Dream

Books

I dreamt there was a library where every book described a person—not their life, but every decision they didn't make. Shelves upon shelves of unlived possibilities. The strange part was that the books kept rewriting themselves whenever someone, somewhere, changed their mind.

Naturally, I got curious.

There was a librarian who looked deeply offended by curiosity. Every time I reached for a book, he'd mutter, "That's not the version anymore," and replace it with another.

Eventually I found one with your name on the spine.

Before opening it, I hesitated. It felt... wrong. Like reading someone's diary before they'd written it. So I put it back.

Instead, I wandered into the section labeled "Abandoned Projects."

It was enormous.

Half-finished novels. Languages people meant to learn. Musical instruments bought in moments of optimism. Businesses that lived only in notebooks. Websites with one perfect homepage and nothing behind it.

Then I spotted something familiar.

A tiny shelf with a little skull carved into it. On it sat a black Android phone with your checkerboard app open. It wasn't finished, but every time you picked it up, another button appeared by itself. The backend wasn't there because someone else had built it—it appeared because you'd finally understood the previous piece.

The librarian smiled for the first time and said,

"People think motivation builds projects. It doesn't. Projects are fossils of repeated Tuesdays."

Then, with spectacular dramatic timing, I woke up.
