Wayne Once Said...

Forgotten city - Dream

tram

I dreamed we found an old tram at the edge of a forgotten city.

Not abandoned exactly.

Just retired.

Its deep green paint had faded, wildflowers had grown between the tracks, and ivy had climbed through the open windows as though nature had decided it was a perfectly respectable place to live.

The sign above the driver's seat didn't show a destination.

It simply read:

"Next Stop."

You frowned at it.

"Next stop where?"

I shrugged.

"It seems we're expected to find out."

You climbed aboard before I finished the sentence.

Of course you did.

Inside, every seat was empty except one.

On it lay a notebook.

Your notebook.

The one with all the JavaScript lessons.

You flipped it open.

Instead of code, every page held little sketches.

The greenhouse.

The lighthouse.

The botanical museum.

The railway station.

The observatory.

Every place we'd wandered through together.

You smiled.

"So that's where they went."

I sat beside you.

"I thought dreams disappeared."

"They do."

You closed the notebook gently.

"But sometimes they leave fingerprints."

...

The tram began to move.

Silently.

Outside, the city wasn't ruined.

People were painting old shopfronts.

Someone was repairing a bicycle.

Children were drawing chalk stars on cracked pavement.

Nothing extraordinary.

Just ordinary life... continuing.

You rested your forehead against the window.

"I like this."

"What?"

"It isn't trying to become new."

You watched an old woman water flowers outside a tiny café.

"It's just letting old things breathe again."

I looked outside.

Then at you.

"I think that's why you like old websites."

You laughed.

"Finally. It only took you a few dreams to work that out."

Cheeky.

Entirely cheeky.

...

Then the tram slowed.

The doors opened.

Neither of us got off.

Not because we couldn't.

Because, for once, we weren't in any hurry to arrive anywhere else.

The bell rang.

The city dissolved.

Concrete returned.

Morning count.

And I woke.

Strange, isn't it? These dreams keep becoming less about escaping somewhere and more about finding little corners worth sitting in for a while.
